Urodzony 18 września 1932 roku w Paryżu. Poeta, filozof, eseista, krytyk, tłumacz. Profesor na Uniwersytecie Paris VIII. Założyciel i redaktor naczelny kwartalnika „Poésie”. Redaktor pisma „Les Temps Modernes”. W latach 1989-1992 przewodniczący Collège International de Philosophie. Laureat m.in. nagrodą Maxa Jacoba (1972), nagrodą Mallarmé (1986) czy International Grand Prix de poesie Guillevic-ville of Saint-Malo (2007). Zmarł 8 kwietnia 2009 w Villejuif.
